Unesco Starts Culture for Peace and Development Celebrations in Machakos County Sept.1, 2016
Preparations are already at a top gear for the Unesco national cultural celebrations to be held in Machakos County starting September 1, 2016. The celebrations which are running for the second time will last three days.
In Machakos, the preparations continued throughout the day at the Kenyatta Stadium where youth and women groups fine-tuned their acts.
The theme of the celebrations is: “Promoting Intercultural Dialogue and Culture of Peace for Sustainable Development.”
President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to officially open the event.
National Government ministries, county governments, foreign embassies, universities, colleges, private sector companies, NGO foundations, groups and individuals will participate.
It is a free entry event and the Government is encouraging Kenyans to attend to “witness Kenya’s rich cultural diversity and evolving creative industries, so as to promote inter-cultural dialogue, inclusivity and cohesion.”
According to the Kenya National Commission for UNESCO this will be the first time for the event to be held at the County level with Machakos County being the “first proud host.”
The celebrations will take place at the “magnificent Machakos Peoples Park”.
The event will be characterized by exhibitions, cultural performances, gallery viewing (for artistic works, paintings and photographs), cultural villages and awarding of prizes to the best performers in those categories.
Entries were invited from Performing Arts (Poetry, music, dance), Visual Arts (Painting, sculpture, photography, mixed media), Audio-Visual (Fiction film, documentary), and Material Culture (tools, ornaments, food, traditional medicine).
